Holiday Fun: Milk Carton Gingerbread Houses

Milk Carton Gingerbread House

Milk Carton Gingerbread House

Making gingerbread houses with kids is a Christmas tradition for most of us. Store-bought kits look pretty, but from my experience with them, they are incredibly messy and hard to work with. Building one can also be frustrating as you try to hold everything together as you build! You can still make memories with your kids for the holiday season with this genius idea: Milk Carton “Gingerbread” Houses. Instead of gingerbread, use graham crackers!

This craft ends all frustration around making the perfect gingerbread houses with your kids! It’s . So. Easy. Best part is, the older kids get, the more independent they can be with this. Throw on some Christmas PJ’s, grab a Santa hat, turn on some Christmas music, and let’s get started!

Holiday Craft: Milk Carton Gingerbread Houses

Milk Carton Gingerbread Houses Tutorial

If are working with toddlers, this easy gingerbread house is going to be a lifesaver! All you need to create the structure of the “house” is a school milk carton, or you can use a half and half/ heavy whipping cream carton like I did this year. I used to teach Kindergarten, but now that I stay at home with my son, I don’t have access to the school milk cartons as I used to. The heavy whipping cream containers are a little shorter, but you can definitely make it work once decorations are added. These houses are always a big hit with kids!

Milk Carton Gingerbread House

All Supplies You’ll Need:

Milk Cartons ( I used 1/2 pint heavy whipping cream cartons and they worked out perfectly)

Round dessert plates

Hot Glue gun

Vanilla Frosting (the “glue”)

Jumbo Craft Sticks to Spread “glue”

Skittles

Chocolate Chips

M&M’s

Gum Drops

Peppermints

Mini Candy Canes

Pretzel Sticks

Fruity Cheerios or Fruit Loops

Red Hots Candy

Sprinkles

Mini Marshmallows

Graham Crackers

Sectioned Tray or cupcake/muffin tins

Milk Carton Gingerbread Houses  Directions:

  1. The day before building, empty out, wash and air dry milk or heavy whipping cream cartons.
  2. Use hot glue gun to glue the opening shut of the empty cartons. It should look just like it did before opening. If you are making more than one, now’s the time to write names on the bottom of the plate to avoid mix-ups.
  3. Use the hot glue gun to glue the bottom of each milk carton to the center of the dessert plate for each child.
  4. Use a sectioned tray or cupcake tray to sort each type of treat you’ll be using to decorate. This makes it super easy for kids to reach in and get just what they need for their little “gingerbread” creation 🙂

How to Build and Decorate:

  1. Break the graham crackers in half so that you have 6 halves per house. Have the child frost one side of the graham cracker half (like glue) and place it on each side of the milk carton. This creates the walls and the roof of the gingerbread house. The icing works like a charm so you are not holding things together praying that they don’t come crashing down as you build haha!
  2. Be creative and continue on using icing as glue and then sticking the candy on the gingerbread house. It helps with really small children to make a model with them, letting them watch you make one first. Then they can use your model as a guide  when building their own 🙂 This worked great with my 2, almost 3-year-old.

That’s all! When kids are all done, these cute little houses make the room smell good and look so festive for the holidays! They work great as a craft for kid parties, too. Here’s a look at JP’s and at mine!

Holiday Decorating Traditions | Wayfair Holiday Blogger Campaign

Wayfair Holiday Decorating Traditions

Hey friends! Wayfair has an amazing selection of home decor items are definitely a source of inspiration when I am decorating my own home. I’m excited to share a little today about some of my Holiday Decorating Traditions in partnership with Wayfair and fellow blogger, Lindsay!  Keep reading to see what I consider some of my Holiday Decorating Traditions, as well as a little peek into how I like to decorate for Christmas time.

Holiday Decoration Traditions

Everyone has those traditions that make the holidays extra special. Lots of baking and good food & drinks, holiday family outtings, Christmas books and movies, and fun Christmas pj’s are just a few of ours!  When it comes to Holiday Decorating Traditions, I have a quite few as well!  Decorating all year long with mixed metals is my go-to.  Christmas time is when I to add a little bit more glitz and glam to those metals around the house.

Wayfair Holiday Decorating Traditions

The tree is my focal point, with a good mixture of winter & natural elements, a few rustic touches, and of course a bit of glam. Galvanized things and pops of traditional red for the holidays can be found throughout. Faux fur, flocking, and yes, buffalo plaid, are absolute musts and all add to the cozy factor!

WAYFAIR Holiday decorating traditions

It’s now a tradition to shop the after Christmas sales for finds to add to the upcoming year’s decor. Aside from my son’s keepsake and the sentimental ornaments, some of my favorite ornaments have been found during the after christmas sales online and in stores!  These ornaments are perfect because they incorporate mercury glass and give a mixed metals vibe with the light beading on top.

Wayfair Holiday Decorating Traditions

I’m the only girl in the house, so adding girly touches here and there are necessary! Check out these precious little cupcake ornaments and this darling mini chandelier! Coordinating gift wrap to the theme helps things look put together. Prints with brown kraft paper backgrounds, gold glitter, and buffalo check are always a good idea in my book!

Wayfair Holiday Decorating Traditions

Holiday themed throw pillows to our white sofas really helps make it feel festive and bright! Having a white ‘base” is a lifesaver because I can change out pillows depending on what vibe I am going for with my holiday decor each year. I ordered these and I can’t wait for them to arrive this week!

One of my favorite (and easiest) centerpiece ideas is to make use of glass apothecary jars and the extra ornaments you have! Bowls filled with pinecones and using tree slices on tables is a fantastic way to incorporate more the natural elements holiday decor. Holiday scented and beautifully packaged candles helps to set the ambiance.

Fall Bucket List 2017

Fall Bucket List 2017

I’m so happy that it finally is beginning to actually feel like fall in NC. There are a lot more things that we want to do as a family this season.  JP is 2 1/2 now and able to enjoy things even more, which makes it really exciting. Today’s post is a quick & fun one: Our fall bucket list! We’ve already done a few things on the list and have had a ball. This is my first year actually writing things down (not just keeping a running list in my head) and it’s been working out great 🙂 It’s been a lot of fun to check off as we go!

What things are on your family’s Fall Bucket List this year?

I’ve got some really exciting posts coming later this week that I can’t wait to share! Hope you’ll stop by again … Have a good evening, friends!

Decorating With Classic Black and White

One look I can’t get enough of is classic black and white. Combining black and white gives off a chic vibe. Decorating with a black and white theme can be used subtly, but can also be used to makes a statement. While it is truly versatile, sometimes it can be tricky to achieve the warm, calming, and sophisticated look most are going for. From going total glam to gaining a cozy cottage feel, black and white can be used to achieve your overall look! Today, I’ve rounded up a few gorgeous black and white décor looks for the home.

Decorating With Black and White

The use of bold black and white horizontal lines on part of the wall makes this office space look so sophisticated! Simple office decor with sprinkles of blush add some softness, while a nice bouquet of flowers adds even more femininity to the space. Gold dipped legs on the minimalistic style desk is a pretty finishing touch to the room that works to tie everything together well.

This room makes a glamorous statement using black, white, and hot pink accents! Adding more masculine touches such as the chunky legs, rough texture, and stout stature of the coffee table helps to achieve a good balance between masculine and feminine. Using the pale gray rug and sofa in this space really adds a soft touch to the room. Rose gold accents really pop for even more of a glam look!
