French toast has to be one of my favorite breakfast foods-EVER! This French Toast bake is absolutely delicious and takes very little time to prepare, making it perfect for the holidays when we are all so busy and have lots of family and friends around. I’ve been making this one on the weekends for my family for a few years now and love it all year round, and it’s perfect for Christmas Eve or even Christmas Morning. This year, I am making this french toast bake for us to enjoy on Christmas morning – I can’t wait to celebrate Jacob’s 1st Christmas! This recipe does require some simple overnight prep, but that completely pays off when you take the first bite! This can be eaten with or without syrup and it makes a bunch to feed a crowd if needed. We like it with just a little syrup 🙂 The recipe is below and it’s truly a treat that’s reminiscent of warm cinnamon rolls!
Ingredients:
1 cup light brown sugar
1 Tbsp Powdered sugar and then desired amount to sprinkle on before serving
3 Eggs
1 1/2 cup of Milk (can use Almond Milk)
1 stick of Butter (Earth Balance Vegan Butter Substitute can be used)
1 tsp Vanilla extract
Cinnamon
Sugar (granulated)
Thick Sliced Bread, such as Texas Toast
*This French toast bake will be assembled similar to a lasagna, by making layers. *
*TIPS: I like to use disposable pans to make this french toast since the brown sugar layer goes on the very bottom layer. It makes clean up easier 🙂 I also like to use the pre-made cinnamon sugar mix in the shaker.
Directions:
1. Combine butter and brown sugar in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave until melted and stir. Pour the mixture into the bottom of a 13X9 pan.
2.Mix eggs, milk , vanilla, and 1 Tbsp powdered sugar with a mixer on low.
3. On top of the brown sugar and butter layer, build the first layer of bread. Be sure to cover the entire brown sugar mixture that’s on the bottom.
4. Spoon on the egg and milk mixture.
5. Sprinkle lightly with cinnamon and granulated sugar.
6.Build another layer of bread and complete the same steps again. Once the egg mixture and last layer of cinnamon and granulated sugar has been added, apply a thin layer of a little more melted butter on top so that it all browns nicely and forms a slight crusty top.
7.Cover the french toast and refrigerate overnight.
8.Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes covered, and then uncover and bake for an additional 20 minutes uncovered.
9. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve immediately with or without syrup-it’s pretty sweet on it’s own. You can serve upside down so the brown sugar layer is on top or bottom. Either way works!
It comes out looking like this before flipping over to the brown sugar layer. The outside layers of this french toast are slightly crusty and the inside of each piece is soft and scrumptious 🙂
