Kind words are like honey–sweet to the soul and healthy for the body. (Proverbs 16:24 NLT)
We use words daily as a way to communicate. One thing is for sure: it’s not easy to say the right things at all times for any of us! Even though it can be tough, guarding our speech is a wise thing to do. The Holy Spirit helps us, so asking for help with words is what we can do to improve, making sure that our speech is sweet.
The words we speak have the power to influence the atmosphere. So, thinking before speaking is a good way to be sure words are impactful and helpful, not harmful.
For Christians, the goal is to have the words we speak be a blessing to people, not tear them town. Because words are powerful, we are much better off when we choose to use them wisely. Words we speak reveal the motives of our hearts. Being slow to speak is usually the best way to go.
Devotion: Sweet Speech & Kind Words
Submitting to God gives us true power and influence. Therefore, making our words more God-directed opens the door for grace to come in. The more we fill our hearts with God’s word and truth, in turn, God’s word and truth will then be what comes out of our mouths when talking to others and about others.
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29
Application: How To Make Sure Your Speech Is Sweet
We all can use a little help with our words. We can guard our speech by taking some time to stop before speaking. We should always ask ourselves these things:
Are my words necessary?
Are my words kind?
Are these words true?
God teaches us and guides us on our journey into living a lifestyle where our words are sweet, helpful, and encouraging. We can be a blessing in every situation!
Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing. For the Scriptures say,
“If you want to enjoy life
and see many happy days,
keep your tongue from speaking evil
and your lips from telling lies.
Turn away from evil and do good.
Search for peace, and work to maintain it. (1 Peter 3:9-11)

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit. (Proverbs 18:21)
O Lord, put a watch over my mouth. Keep watch over the door of my lips. (Psalm 141:3)
